Mass High Tech Whiz Kid nomination: UMass Dartmouth Electrical Engineering

Adam J. CARVALHO

Major: Computer Engineering
Graduation date: May 23, 2004

Work history (if any): Adam J. Carvalho has been a Computer Engineering intern at UMass Dartmouth's Advanced Technology & Manufacturing Center (ATMC). Mr. Carvalho has rendered high-quality service to several of the center's major projects with his enthusiasm and integrity. Notable projects include designing/building/debugging sensors and relays for a local lighting company and improving the fabric coating control system for a local textile firm.

Goals after graduation: After graduation, Adam J. Carvalho plans to find an entry-level job in the Computer Engineering field. Upon entering the field, he looks forward to applying what he has learned through his work experience and his own studies. He keeps a graduate school option in mind for the future.

Faculty comments: Dr. Hong Liu (mailto:HLiu@UMassD.edu) supervised Adam J. Carvalho's Senior Design Project called "Air2Ear." It is a wireless computer system that distributes self-programmed music for settings like health clubs or school gyms. Instead of listening to the broadcast music or carrying a cumbersome audio device, Air2Ear allows a gym member to enjoy his/her music of choice via a wireless headphone. The member can upload his/her favorite music pieces from home to the music server at the gym, which maintains records of individual members and streams music pieces over a wireless network. The system offers a whole range of user interaction for music replay.
The underlying technology for Air2Ear is real-time multimedia applications over the Internet. Adam led his group in developing the design proposal, a thorough design plan, by an extensive simulation study of the system performance. They have completed the prototype of the system. Their demo at the Senior Project Design Review, on February 18, 2004, received high appraisal. Adam played a central role in designing and implementing Air2Ear both in hardware and software components. The project demonstrates Adam's diverse knowledge and skills in various areas of computer engineering.
