CTE Departmental/Interdepartmental Teaching Development Grants

Goals

The Center for Teaching Excellence invites proposals from academic departments and interdisciplinary programs to enhance discipline-specific teaching and learning. Priority will be given to proposals that develop sustained collaboration between the faculty of a department or interdisciplinary program and focus on the attainment of departmental/program-level teaching objectives. Grants will not be given to an individual to carry out a project on behalf of the department.

  • The grants do not support the development of new programs or departments.
  • The grants typically do not support the purchase of equipment.

Examples of possible project goals include (but are certainly not limited to):

  • Creating effective learning contexts for majors (e.g., capstone courses, service learning);
  • Developing interdisciplinary team teaching and course development;
  • Supporting innovative uses of technology;
  • Developing innovative laboratory/applied projects;
  • Improving sequencing of courses (e.g., course mapping & curriculum analysis);
  • Improving particular aspects of the program (e.g., introductory courses; research skills of majors, etc.);
  • Developing approaches to discipline-specific problems (e.g., how to teach about "race"; supporting women in engineering; etc.).

See Departmental/Interdepartmental Teaching Development Grants - Past Years to see examples of past successful proposals.

Guidelines

All UMass Dartmouth departments and academic programs are eligible to apply.

The maximum grant amount will be $1000. The number of grants will vary depending on funding.

The application deadline is shown at the top of the main grants page. Applications received after the deadline will be considered until funding is exhausted.

The proposed project/work must be completed in one year including a final report submitted to CTE.

If requested by CTE, the project/work must be disseminated to the campus community through an appropriate venue.

Projects that involve curriculum/course modification or similar activities must have the approval of the Chair of the department(s).

What can the grant cover? The grant can cover costs for:

  • Materials (books, videos, xeroxing, etc.) It does not cover the purchase of equipment;
  • Facilitators, workshop leaders, outside speakers;
  • Food for workshops or retreat;
  • Attendance at regional or national conferences if information is brought back to rest of faculty;
  • Employment of student assistants;
  • Summer stipends for participating faculty members.

Application Procedure

Send completed applications via email attachment to Rita Girard (see contact us) and send 5 hard copies to Rita Girard at the CTE offices by the deadline. Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

Selection Process

The Grant Committee is comprised of representatives of each of the Academic Councils and the Director. All efforts will be made to evaluate proposals and send notification decisions in a timely manner. A written explanation will be provided to departments whose applications are declined.
