Before purchasing, make sure the product you have selected is compatible with your computer and with the UMass Dartmouth Wireless network. The UMass Dartmouth network conforms to 802.11 b and 802.11 g wireless standards.
How do I set up the wireless card, wireless software and VPN software?
Users must also follow several procedures for making the wireless hardware and software work with the UMD Wireless Network. Each of the links below connects to various documents that provide detailed instructions. Please follow the order indicated below.
Computing Policy
Before you move on, please familiarize yourself with the Computing Policies of UMass Dartmouth. As a user of our network and computer systems you are responsible for complying with these policies.
What is VPN and why do I need it?
The UMD wireless network is a secure network that connects to the Internet through a VPN server. The acronym VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. VPN software provides secure connections for normally non-secure methods of Internet communication.
The VPN client software installed on a workstation makes a special connection with a VPN server. All network communication is encrypted, then filtered through the VPN server, making it virtually impossible for hackers to obtain sensitive information in transit. A VPN connection is required to use the wireless network on campus, and to access applications (such as ReservIt and PeopleSoft SA Full Service, Finance and HR) from off-campus locations.
