University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Students' Survey on the Proposed Masters program in Applied and Computational Mathematics
Spring, 2006

The department of Mathematics at the University of Massachusetts is proposing a Master's Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics. This program will prepare students for careers in industry or for more advanced studies at the graduate level. We are building three exciting options designed specifically for UMass Dartmouth students and the South Coast community.

  1. A streamlined five year combined program leading to both a BS and an MS degree.
Undergraduates enrolling in the combined program will take courses during their junior and senior years that will count towards both degrees. Thus, instead of taking 4 years for a Bachelor of Science degree and 2 years for a masters degree, students will be able to complete the combined program in 5 years.
  2. Joint Graduate Programs in the Applied Sciences
Graduate students in engineering, physical sciences and life sciences that wish to specialize in computational methods for their discipline will be able to pick up a second degree in applied and computational mathematics by following a joint curriculum that satisfies the requirements of both graduate programs.
  3. Multitrack system for people currently employed.
A flexible multitrack system will accomodate part-time students who work in local industries or in government laboratories, and secondary school teachers who wish to continue their education and complete a master's degree program while working.

The details of the proposal can be found from http://www.umassd.edu/cas/mathematics/masters.

This survey will help us to design the program that best meets the needs of our students. Your input and suggestions will serve as a valuable source of information in this exciting developmental phase of the program. Thank you for your participation.
